Five Questions Families Should Ask During a Senior Living Tour

A senior living tour is more than a walkthrough. It is an opportunity to understand how a community will support someone you love.

1. How will the care plan be created and updated?

Ask who participates in the assessment, how often needs are reviewed and how families are notified when support changes. The answer should describe a clear process—not only a promise of personalized care.

2. What is included in the monthly rate?

Request a written explanation of base rent, care charges, medication support, transportation, supplies and other possible fees. Comparing complete costs is more useful than comparing starting prices.

3. How are team members trained and supported?

Learn about onboarding, ongoing education, overnight coverage and how leadership responds to staffing challenges. Notice how team members interact with residents while you are visiting.

4. How will you communicate with our family?

Ask who your main contact will be, what routine updates look like and how urgent concerns are handled. Consistent communication can make a major difference after move-in.

5. What happens if needs change?

Understand the community’s ability to support increasing care needs, how pricing may change and which circumstances could require a transition. Planning ahead helps families avoid rushed decisions later.

Bring a notebook, observe the atmosphere and ask the same core questions at every community. The right choice should make sense both emotionally and practically.
